Kendrapara: When the repetitive demands of dowry remained unfulfilled, 22-year-old Rasmita Sahoo was tied to a bed, doused with kerosene and then set on fire by her heartless in-laws.
This shocking incident occurred at Baradia under Rajanagar police limits of Kendrapada district. With over 60% burn injuries Rasmita is currently under-treatment.
While the incident occurred on Saturday, it came to light today.
As per the FIR lodged by the survivor’s father, Rasmita Sahoo had married Bikram Das in June 2018. As per the complainant Brahmananda Sahoo had paid a huge amount of dowry during the time of marriage but the demands never ended. And hence Rasmita was continually mentally and physically harassed by her in-laws.
In February 2019 they had filed a complaint regarding the same in Rajanagar police limits but Bikram’s family had given in writing that it would not happen again. However, the atrocities continued.
On February 1 this year, Brahmananda received a call at about 6.30 am that his daughter has been admitted to hospital with 60% burn injuries. He mentions in his report that his daughter was tied to a bed and doused with kerosene before lighting her. The act was allegedly done by Rasmita’s father-in-law, mother-in-law and married sister-in-law.
A case under IPC Sections 498-A, 323, 307, 34 and 4 was lodged and a probe has been initiated.
