Bhubaneswar: Damodar Rout and Bijoy Mohapatra are two old warhorses of Odisha politics whose fate is hanging in balance for quite some time. There is not much difference between the two Biju loyalists as both have been kept at arms lengths by their respective erstwhile parties, BJD and the BJP.

While Dama was unceremoniously ousted from the BJD, Bijoy was submitted his resignation from BJP after a prolonged isolation from the saffron party’s leadership.

"Given the expenses involved in contesting elections, pitching themselves as independent candidates would be futile for Damodar Rout and Bijay Mohapatra. Besides, it is not a feasible proposition to contest elections without the support of any of the three major political parties, BJD, BJP or the Congress," senior journalist Jimuta Mangaraj said.

It is believed that the two are switching sides very soon. With elections on the anvil, the two leaders have no other options left. Their ambitions of floating separate parties have been cornered amid heavy political slugfest in Odisha.

There is no second question that the 2019 elections in Odisha will be centred on Naveen Patnaik. So, BJD would certainly have an advantage of cashing in the Chief Minister's image, senior scribe Priya Ranjan Sahoo said.

“When it comes to Damodar Rout and Bijoy Mohapatra, the two leaders have base in their respective constituencies. Instead of hopping parties, the two can take a chance of contesting as independents," Sahoo added.
