Odisha: VIMSAR Director Aswini Pujahari Sent On Leave, Junior Doctors Call Off Strike

Sambalpur: Soon after allegations emerged against Director of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) Dr Aswini Kumar Pujahari of using unproven therapies for treatment followed by a probe into it, the Health and Family Welfare department of Government of Odisha sent him on leave today till further order.

Attaching the enquiry report of the team constituted to look into the allegations leveled against the director, Pramod Kumar Meherda, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to Government wrote in the show-cause notice to Pujahari, “A reply on the observations and findings of the team should be submitted to this Department within three days and if no reply is received within the stipulated period, then it will be presumed that you have nothing to say and the matter will be decided as deemed proper and appropriate. Further, I am directed to inform you that you shall proceed on leave till your reply to the show-cause notice is received and disposed by Government.”

Dr. Prakash Chandra Mohapatra, Director, Regional Spinal Injury Centre, Cuttack has been kept in-charge Director, VIMSAR, Burla in addition to his own duties until further orders. Dr. Mohapatra was requested to assume charge of Director, VIMSAR, Burla with immediate effect.

Pujahari had withdrawn from surgical practice at the institute on Saturday after a video of him using unproven therapies for treatment with salt during a surgery had emerged. Soon after the video went viral on gone viral on social media, a probe committee had been formed on Dec 6 headed by Health Additional Secretary Sarat Mishra had submitted its report to the government.

Meanwhile, the doctors under the aegis of Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA), who had gone on a cease-work stir since November 19 demanding removal of Dr. Pujahari, called off the strike after the show-cause notice was served.
