Cuttack: In a shocking incident, an undertrial prisoner lodged in Choudwar jail died while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The deceased has been identified as Bharat Mandal. Meanwhile, his family members have alleged that Bharat died after being beaten up by cops.

Reportedly, he was arrested on March 28 on the basis of a warrant from Purighat area. Police had seized a country made revolver and two rounds of bullets from his possession. He was convicted and lodged in Choudwar jail.

After few days, he was admitted in the hospital due to some health issues. However, when he took his last breath today, his mother and sister alleged that cops had beaten him up due to which he died.

On the other hand, DCP Akhilesvar Singh said, "Nothing of this sort has happened. If anything has happened, we will look into the matter and investigate it further. I would like to point out here that his entire family has a criminal background. Mandal's father has been convicted and there is a warrant in each of his brother's name."

Reportedly, as many as seven cases including of attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act were pending against him at the Purighat police station.

Till last reports came in, Bharat's family members have been staging dharna in front of the police station. They alleged the police is not handing over his body and has also denied to accept their request to take his body under full police protection through their locality before performing his last rites.
