Cuttack: Going beyond the call of duty, a traffic cop saved an accident victim's life by carrying him on his shoulders and donating blood for his treatment. The incident occurred on March 21 when Umesh Parida was on duty at the Badambadi Post and suddenly he saw a 35-year-old man screaming for help.

It so happened that one Binay Mohanty's legs were caught between the divider grills and a bus that was trying to make an U-Turn. He was bleeding profusely and was heading toward the state of becoming unconscious.

Umesh rushed to the spot and rescued Binay from the accident scene. He carried Binay on his shoulders to an auto-rickshaw and accompanied him to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Since Binay had lost a lot of blood from his body, Umesh volunteered to donate some blood as he was a match.

He was felicitated for his courage and service today by Commissioner of Police Satyajit Mohanty. Handing over a letter of appreciation to Umesh, Mohanty said, "Umesh should become an example for all the police personnel on-duty. Everyone should derive inspiration from his actions and strive to be the best in serving humanity and mankind."
