Bhubaneswar: Former Team India captain and coach Anil Kumble believes that in the next few years some champions will come out of Odisha.

"I strongly believe that with so many experienced athletes imparting knowledge back into the sport here in the State, in the next few years you will see some champions coming out from the State," said the cricketer speaking to reporters at the Lok Seva Bhawan here today.

The former Team India captain was here to deliver a lecture on 'Indian Sports-An Introspection' at the 22nd Odisha Knowledge Hub (OKH) Lecture Series which is being organized by the Department of Planning & Convergence.

Kumble acknowledged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's initiatives for development and promotion of sports in the State which includes organizing international sports events.

"I am really glad that the initiative has been taken by the honourable Chief Minister and we have seen international events happening. I was here for the Hockey World Cup, it’s wonderful to see Odisha taking the lead" said Kumble.

The former Team India coach was delighted for being invited to deliver a lecture.

"I am delighted for being invited for the Knowledge Hub lecture, this itself shows how much respect is accorded to sports here," the former Team India coach stated.

Kumble was of the opinion that if we want to become a sporting nation and win medals at the Olympics then we need to invest at the grassroots level.

"The more number of people play at the grassroots level, the more will be the competition; benchmarks will be raised. In my belief if we pay attention to this it will automatically result in medals rather than just focusing before the Olympics," he said.
