Malkangiri: An Indian striped hyena was found in a critical state on Thursday morning on Purusuguda main road in Kalimela Forest Range here. It passed away before any treatment due to its injuries possibly due to an accident.

Suresh Chandra Swain, Kalimela Forester, said that they were informed that a hyena was in a critical state on the Purusguda main road. He and his team rushed to the spot and took the poor animal to Malkangiri District Veterinary Hospital. However, the animal was declared ‘brought dead’.

Swain informed that the hyena had suffered injuries on its spine, head and fore legs. He suspects that the animal could have been hit by some vehicle and hence the injuries.

It is important to note here that Indian striped hyena is a protected species listed in Schedule III of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. They are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ animals in IUCN Red List Category.
