Bhubaneswar: With onion prices escalating in the markets, the State Government has asked the districts' administration to check the rising trend by making onions available at affordable prices.

In a letter to District Collectors, the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has directed to take necessary steps to make onion available at Government Fair Price Shops and Maitree outlets.

The Additional Secretary of FS and CW Department, Jyoti Kumar Lakra has stated that the Collectors should ensure procurement of onions from local markets and sell to the bonafide consumers at no-profit-no-loss basis.

Onions are being sold at Rs 52 to Rs 70 per kg in different parts of the State. Heavy rains in October and November in the producer states have damaged standing kharif crop.

"Taking advantage of such a situation, the traders may resort to high profiteering and sell this essential commodity at an exorbitant price by hoarding and creating artificial scarcity in the market," the letter added.
