Rourkela: Koida police under Rourkela police district have arrested four persons accused of impersonating themselves as Rourkela RTO (Regional Transport Office) staff and committing the crime of extortion on the highway patch.
The four arrested persons have been identified as Laxmidhar Panda (Teacher of a local public school), Sambhunath Dash (Forest Department Gardener), Basant Kumar Routray and Ranjan Kumar Ojha (Driver of the seized Scorpio).
As per the Koida PS Case No-08 Dt.07.02.2019 U/s 384/419/420/34 IPC, the police have made the arrests basing on the compliant of one Santosh Kumar Rabi Das of Koida under Bonaigarh sub-division in Sundargarh district. Santosh is the owner of the seized Scorpio.
As per the history of the case, complainant Santosh Kumar Rabi Das on February 7 at about 06.30 pm appeared at Koida Police Station (PS) and reported that last night (on 06.02.2019) his Scorpio, bearing Regd No-OD 02 Al 2252 and driven by his driver Ranjan Kumar Ojha, was given on rent to Laxmidhar Panda (Teacher), but he came to know on 07.02.2019 morning from his driver that the vehicle front and back side glasses were in broken condition at Rengalbeda.
On going to the spot, the owner also found that his Scorpio in broken condition was lying abandoned on the road side of Rengalbeda.
On enquiry from the nearby Dhaba and drivers, Scorpio owner Santosh came to know that for the last three days i.e. from 4/5/6.02.2019, Laxmidhar Panda (Teacher) with one Sambhunath Das (Forest Department Gardener), Basant Kumar Routray with the Scorpio driver Ranjan Kumar Ojha used to commit the crime of extortion from the drivers of Trucks/Ten Wheelers/Trailers on the Rengalbeda road patch of Koida impersonating themselves as RTO of Rourkela.
On 06.02.2019 night, the drivers of truck smelt rat and all the four were caught by the drivers. However, the four accused were able to flee leaving behind the Scorpio. Thus, the Scorpio used for the crime and left by the culprits was damaged by the irate drivers on the spot.
Besides arresting the four fake RTO personnel, Koida police have also seized Rs 10,200 cash, two pairs of Khaki uniform with Odisha Forest Logo, 4 mobile phones and the Scorpio used for committing the offence.
