Ganjam: Top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda was today sentenced to life imprisonment by the Berhampur Additional District Judge (ADJ) Court here for ‘waging war’ against the Government of India.  

The verdict was pronounced by Berhampur ADJ-1 Sanjay Sahu in connection with a case of 2014 (case no 127/14) registered under Bada Bazaar Police Station limits in Berhampur police district.

The trial of left wing extremist’s case was under Section 121 in the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Section 121 of IPC reads: “Waging, or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war, against the Government of India.—Whoever, wages war against the [Government of India], or attempts to wage such war, or abets the waging of such war, shall be punished with death, or [imprisonment for life] [and shall also be liable to fine].”

Notably, the top Maoist leader, who has been languishing in jail since his arrest in 2014, has earlier been acquitted in around 52 cases registered against him at various police stations in Odisha.
