Rourkela: In a major crackdown, Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized two suitcases containing Rs 2.23 crore cash at Rourkela railway station here today morning and three persons were arrested in connection with the incident.

The arrested persons are Rajan Shrivastav, Sanjay Gupta and Sunil Kumar.

The three persons were part of an inter-state train robbers’ gang as cases against them were registered at GRP Ahmedabad and GRP Howrah on Jan 23 and March 3 respectively.

According to reports, the accused had looted a trolley bag containing jewelries and other valuables worth Rs 2.79 lakh from a passenger on January 19 in Chakradharpur railway division. A similar complaint was lodged at GRP Howrah after valuables worth Rs 3.14 crore were looted from a passenger.

The robbers used to loot the passengers by availing reservation tickers on AC compartments and producing forged documents and mobile numbers.

Acting on the complaints, CCTV footage was verified and the suspects were identified. Following interrogation, the accused robbers confessed to the crime and seized Rs 2.23 crore cash from them.

While RPF has handed over the case to Government Railway Police (GRP), the officials are currently on the lookout for rest of the money. Further probe into the matter is currently underway.
