Bhubaneswar: Rajya Sabha Member and senior editor Soumya Ranjan Patnaik is one of the harbingers of contemporary journalism in the Odisha newspaper industry. Later stage, his other media ventures diversified remarkably.

However, coming to politics, the uncontested media baron of Odisha, has not been successful to the same degree.

Today Patnaik filed his nomination from Khandapada for the Assembly elections.

The day his name was announced by BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for Khandapada, Patnaik said that he has an emotional attachment with the constituency ever since he leaped into politics.

A post-graduate from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as well as a former academician, Patnaik lost Khandapada elections in 2014 to BJD, with a wafer thin margin of 601 votes. Patnaik had contested from his own Ama Odisha Party.

A major feat in Patnaik's political career was in 1996, when he had won Lok Sabha elections from Bhubaneswar on a Congress ticket. And then it was in 2018, when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha only after joining the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Khandapada elections will be keenly watched as the results would pave the path for the veteran journalist-turned poltician's maiden entry into the Odisha Legislative Assembly (OLA).
