Puri: In an unusual incident, a porcupine was spotted in Anlakuda village under Krushnaprasad block here a few days ago following which panic had gripped the area as its coat of quills can severely injure someone.

Reportedly, the villagers spotted the animal while going to the fields for work early in the morning. The porcupine was being chased by wild street dogs following which the villagers tried to rescue it. The porcupine ran inside one of the huts and finally the locals were able to catch hold of it. On intimation, officials of forest department reached the spot and the porcupine was handed over to them.

They informed that the animal is currently being treated and will be left in the jungle soon after. While the population of porcupines is on the decline, the sighting of the animal in that area has spread curiosity.
