Balangir: The bail plea of Punjilal Meher, the mastermind of the parcel bomb tragedy in Bolangir’s Patnagarh which claimed two lives, hangs in uncertainty as of today after he had applied for the same for performing the last rites of his mother.
He is cooling heels behind the bars of Patnagarh Sub-Jail. Sanjay Varma, Patnagarh Sub-Jail Jailer, said, "His family and his lawyer came to visit him and informed regarding his mother’s death. The bail plea was made to perform the last rites. However, no decision has been made as of now.”
Punjilal’s last successful attempt at applying for a bail was made on March 25 last year.s of Patnagarh Sub-Jail.
Punjilal’s mother had been suffering from cancer and breathed her last at Balangir DHH on Friday. Her mortal remains were kept at the mortuary while the family waited for Punjilal to come and perform the last rites. In his absence, the family is at a fix.
Notably, Punjilal planned and executed the parcel bomb crime as a lone wolf in which newly-married techie Soumya Sekhar Sahu and his grandmother Jemamani were killed. His wife Reema had got seriously injured and later recovered at Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital after months-long treatment.
As per the Crime Branch investigation, Punjilal, who is a senior English lecturer by profession had alone devised the killer bomb, had gone to Raipur carrying it in the shape of parcel and had also booked it in a courier company near the railway station there. This parcel sent as a marriage gift exploded at Soumya’s residence on February 23, 2018, and his granny.
Crime Branch probe has also revealed that Punjilal had nurtured a die-hard vengeance against Soumya’s mother who was promoted to the post of Principal of the college in Punjilal’s place. To take revenge against her, Punjilal had decided to bump off her whole family and give her a scar for life.
