Bhubaneswar: Correctional service is a key component of incarceration. There are around 18,000 convicts and undertrials behind bars in Odisha, and the Prisons and Correctional Services Directorate has come up with new plans to make the lives of the inmates better in confinement.

DG Prisons and Correctional Services, Satyajit Mohanty has informed that jails will be equipped with better facilities for the prisoners to converse with their family. The project is still in the proposal stage, he said.

"There will be better microphone and headphones for their use. This would not check disturbances and also help us recording the conversation," Mohanty said.

The Directorate of Prison and Correctional Services is also mooting to introduce smart cards which will give way to cash transactions. There will be better accountability and convenience once the smart cards are in use, Mohanty added.

"There are a slew of other projects which will be introduced in the Circle Jails and the Special Jail in Bhubaneswar, in the first phase. Later, these projects will be started in district jails across Odisha," Mohanty added.
