Bhubaneswar: With two days remaining for the first phase of elections the State Police have beefed up security in the southern districts of the State.

DGP In-Charge Bijay Kumar Sharma today said that all necessary arrangements have been made for ensuring smooth and fair elections in a safe environment.

Since the elections will be held in the southern districts Nabarangpur, Koraput, Kalahandi and Ganjam, the threat from left-winged extremists is pertinent, said Sharma.

"We are sticking to the election commission guidelines with adequate deployment of State Police and Central Armed Police and Paramilitary forces," the DGP said.

"The efforts of the police will be to create an environment in which people can exercise their democratic right in a free, fair and impartial manner, without any fear," Sharma added.

On the other hand, in LWE-infested Malkangiri district anti-Maoist operations are intensively carried out by the police forces.

"Joint operations are carried out across the district by the District Voluntary Force, Special Operations Group and Border Security Force. And also another operation in coordination with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Police is on," Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena said.
