Bhubaneswar: The hearing on the bail petition of Patnagarh MLA Saroj Meher has been deferred to July 5 owing to the cease-work of lawyer in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

Meher, accused of manhandling a Junior Engineer infront of public, was defending himself in the court on his own. A special court has been setup in Bhubaneswar to hear the cases of MPs and MLAs.

Meher will remain in judicial custody at Special Jail in Jharpada here, till the next hearing which is on Friday. He was arrested for forcing JE, Jaykant Sabar of the Public Works Department (PwD) to do sit-ups over alleged poor road construction.

The matter came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The JE’s wife had filed a complaint with the local police based on which the MLA was arrested on June 24.
