Khurda: Floral tributes were paid to martyred jawan Hemant Panda after his mortal remains reached his native Atharang village in Khurda district here today morning. His family members, villagers and people from nearby areas gathered early today morning to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

His mortal remains were consigned to flames at the village and the cremation was then conducted with full state honours. In front the people laid the body of a brave-heart who died fighting for his country while they slept peacefully. They could feel nothing but honor in their hearts for the young one who had made their country and motherland proud. Eyes glistened while the Sun slowly rose up on horizon creating a sombre goodbye for Hemant.

Expressing grief over the death of the jawan, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik extended heartfelt condolences to his family members on Sunday. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “I am deeply saddened on hearing about the death of Odia jawan Hemant Panda. May his soul rest in peace. I extend condolences to his family.” The district administration has pledged to make a 'Shaheed Pitha' at Khurda to honor the martyr. Officials also informed that all assistance and support will be extended to his family.

While the nation was celebrating the 70th Republic Day, Panda was critically injured in a terrorist attack in Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir. 25-year-old Panda had joined the armed forces two years back. After the attack, he was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition but he died while undergoing treatment.
