Rayagada: A shocking scene unfolded in front of Manikeswari Temple here today morning as devotees found the two-and-half-feet Astadhatu idol of deity missing from the sanctum sanctorum near Khedapada in Therubali.

Locals alleged that the miscreants have looted the deity’s idol by breaking open temple’s grille late last night. The matter came to the fore when the temple's priest reached the sanctorum to begin the morning rituals and noticed the idol missing. On intimation, cops reached the spot and began a probe into the incident.

It is notable to mention here that precious ornaments and money from donation boxes (hundis) of temples are increasingly becoming the target of thieves and robbers.
