Rayagada: Tourism & Culture Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi has landed into a controversy for eating chicken during a visit to Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Rayagada district on Wednesday.

A video going viral on social media shows Panigrahi being served chicken when students seating near him are having vegetarian meal. While it portrays that the Minister is acting in contrast to what Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had advised, the facts differ.

Reportedly, the said school is a centrally-funded school to impart quality education to tribal children. It does not follow the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme and chicken was also in the menu on the said day for all non-vegetarian students.

Panigrahi had visited two schools during his visit to Rayagada on Wednesday. After visiting Bhakurguda Seva Ashram in Sadar block of the district and interacting with the students about the quality of education, he reviewed if there is adequate infrastructure to provide the same.

Later, he visited the EMRS and had his lunch with children as part of the CM's instruction. It was not only Panigrahi who consumed chicken, but some other students who preferred to eat non-vegetarian food also had the same.

It is worthwhile to mention that the Chief Minister had on Tuesday asked the Ministers to have their lunch at shelter homes for specially-abled children, orphanages, schools and Aahaar centres during their official visits to get a first-hand feedback and themself experience the quality of food at these facilities.
