Bhubaneswar: A dreaded stone-mining racketeer Sanjay Pradhan and two of his associates Anil Baral and Manoranjan Sahoo gave the police slip on Saturday after firing at the cops.

The incident took place near LIC Office at Khurda late evening on Saturday. Three police officers Alok Jena, Pragnya Paramita Jena and Ashish Jena, and Constable Manas Parida sustained injuries as the criminals tried to run a vehicle over them while fleeing.

This followed a hot pursuit with the criminals and after a while the cops noticed that Sanjay and his gang had abandoned their car at an isolated spot and fled.

"The police have detained one John Khuntia, an associate of Sanjay. A search has been launched to nab the gang which is at large after launching an attack on the Special Task Force (STF) team, led by Alook Jena," said Rahul PR, SP STF.

"Sanjay, an active member of the mining mafia in Khurda and adjoining districts, is also involved in drug peddling. The STF raided the spot on the basis of a tip-off last night. We have detained one person and a country-made pistol has been seized," the STF SP added.
