Bhubaneswar: On 27th November 2018, Ghantapada Nodal High School in Talcher was dismissed half-day as arrangements were made for children to watch the inauguration ceremony of Odisha Men's Hockey World Cup.
Nine-year-old Shrimati Bhadra, a class IV student of the school and her friend Pramila Munda (11), a class VI student, were returning to their homes.
They were crossing a railway track unaware, when a goods train came speeding towards them. While Shrimati had crossed the track, Pramila started screaming for help as she was stuck.
Shrimati used her presence of mind and all her courage to pull out Pramila before any major mishap could take place. She also managed to carry Pramila on her back for 300 metres to reach home at Deramunda Basti and ask for her help.
Later, Pramila was admitted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. She underwent a surgery but lost her right leg. However, her life was saved due to her friend's daring and swift action.
Praises poured in for Shrimati as she showed extraordinary courage to save her dear friend's life. Today, she received a silver medal, a certificate and Rs 1 lakh cash reward by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
“I am very happy to have received this honor. I hope to teach all my friends that they too should help anyone who is in need ", she said.
