Cuttack: Tension gripped Chandni Chowk area here as the locals gheraoed the Lalbag Police Station and also sat on 'dharna' in front of Cuttack DCP office protesting the 'wrongful detention' of a youth by the cops.

Reportedly, the Commissionerate Police has arrested one Chandan Maharana for his alleged involvement in a loot case in Sikharpur area of Cuttack in 2013. Meanwhile, locals have alleged that Chandan was not involved in any such case and his arrest is the case of wrong identity.

Chandan's wife tearfully said, "My kids are suffering. There is no one to take them to the hospital. I want the cops to leave my husband at home with respect."

On the other hand, Cuttack DCP Akhilesvar Singh said, "The arrest has been made as per the warrant and the person has been forwarded to court. But allegations have come that the youth has been arrested wrongfully, so the Inquiry Officer is looking into the matter again. We will pray in the court and if the court agrees then case will be reopened and a new Investigating Officer will be assigned."

Meanwhile, family members of Maharana and over hundred locals staged a mass protest today demanding immediate release of Maharana. They have also moved the State Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention in connection with the matter.
