Odisha: Leopard Found Dead In Bolangir Despite DFO’s ‘No Threat’ Claims

05 February 2019

Bolangir: In a shocking incident, a leopard was found dead with one of its front legs cut-off on the premises of an Ordnance Factory in Badamal area here today morning.

When doubts arose whether it is the same leopard who was spotted roaming freely on the roads last week, DFO Samirkanta Sathpathy said, "No. That was a completely different territory. Though this area is also within the restricted region of Ordnance Factory, it is still very far away from the area that was in the video."

"The carcass has been sent for post-mortem. Prima facie this does not seem like a case of poaching as only one of its legs have been cut-off," he said. Locals suspect that the leopard had fallen prey to a cage set for wild boar.

On January 31, when a video of a leopard roaming freely on road in the same area had gone viral, the DFO had said, “The area is a restricted area as a factory is situated there and no vehicles or public is allowed."

Despite the 'no threat' claim, this incident comes as a shock to the people.
