Bhubaneswar: The Ajit Wadekar Memorial East Zone Dibyang Cricket Tournament is being conducted for first time in the State with four teams - Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar - as participants.

Organised by Odisha Dibyang Cricket Association (ODCA), the event was inaugurated on February 8. Team Odisha has secured its position in the semi-finals after beating Bihar in the quarter-finals and hopes to reach the final, scheduled to be held on February 10.

Briefing OMMCOM NEWS about their preparation, Captain of Team Odisha, Rakhal Kumar Sethy said, "We are aggressive in our preparation to be the champion and our self-confidence has been boosted up after winning the first match with Bihar. Our batting line-up is good and hope good bowling in the second match will take us to the final."

It has been 12 years Odisha is participating in such tournaments but have never been a champion. Sethy hopes that the dream will be fulfilled in this tournament.

He also informed that all orthopaedic disabled persons are playing in the tournament and urged the sponsors of normal teams to watch their match and help them to move forward through sponsorships.

Secretary of ODCA, Namita Sahoo said, the tournament has not been organised with a motive to win or lose but to change the mindset of people that 'dibyangs' or differently-abled persons can't do anything. She hopes all such persons across Odisha who are being oppressed and depressed come to the front and let the society know about their capability.

East Zone representative of All India Cricket Association for Physically Challenged (AICAPC), Bidyut Kumar Dey also shared Sahoo's feelings and informed that now dibyang cricket tournaments are being held at National, State and International level. India had played such a match with Afghanistan in December last year and next match with England is scheduled to be held in coming July.

Reportedly, the Cricket World Cup for Physically Challenged is scheduled to be held in England this year. The selection for the big game will be done at Mumbai in April after completion all zonal tournaments.

The present event was sponsored by National Aluminium Company (NALCO), Rotay Club Elite and AASHRAYA with a budget of Rs 6 lakh for successful conduct of the tournament.

The 17-member Odisha Team constitutes of Rakhal Kumar Sethy (Captain), Punil Kumar Mansingh (Vice-Captain), Paresh Kumar Beura, Alok Panda, Badal Barik, Balaram Bastia, Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, Niranjan Rout, Udit Harpal, Lalit Senapati, Ratikanta Rout, Narendra Kumar Gumansingh, Surendra Tekam, Naresh Kujur, Md Sohel Khan, Bikash Hati and Rajesh Sahoo.
