Bhubaneswar: In pursuance of the Orissa High Court (HC)’s strict directive, the State Government today suspended Jharsuguda Collector Jyoti Ranjan Pradhan for defying the HC’s previous order relating to a liquor shop’s license matter in the district.
The major development has taken place in the wake of the HC’s yesterday’s direction to the Odisha Government to suspend Jharsuguda Collector for flouting its order in connection with cancellation of a liquor shop’s licence.
Taking cognizance of the contempt of court charges against the Jharsuguda Collector yesterday, the division bench of Chief Justice K.S. Jhaveri and Justice K.R. Mohapatra directed the State Government to take the drastic step for not complying with its March 2019 judgment while the next hearing of the case has been posted to August 27.
Earlier this year, the Jharsuguda district administration had issued a demand notice to a liquor trader identified as K.B. Patnaik over non-payment of dues. Patnaik had challenged the notice in the High Court following which the court had directed the district administration not to take any action against him.
However, the incumbent Collector after taking charge cancelled the license of the said trader without any prior notice. As the aggrieved liquor trader moved the HC against it, the HC directed for suspension of the Collector on the charges of contempt of court.
Following the suspension of the incumbent Collector, ADM Pradeep Sahu has been given additional charge as Jharsuguda Collector till further order, the State Government sources said.
