Bhubaneswar: Capital-based Shruti Swain brought great pride for her State by winning the singles silver medal at recently concluded East Zone U-19 Badminton Championship held at Almora, Uttarakhand.
Talking with Ommcom News, all of 16, Swain was ecstatic over her win at the championship whose medal win gave her a direct entry for U-17 and U-19 Nationals.
A Class-X student of Kendriya Vidyalaya-1 of Bhubaneswar, she said, “There was a very healthy competition. Several national-level top-ranked players had participated in the championship and my coach had prepared me accordingly. My training was not only based on honing my badminton skills but also strengthening me physically to prepare for long rallies..”
On asked regarding her preparation for upcoming Nationals, Shruti said “We still have about 50 days for Nationals but have already started getting ready for the upcoming challenge. The U-17 will be held in Bhubaneswar whereas the U-19 will be held at Visakhapatnam and we not leaving any stones unturned for my training.”
During the conversation, she got candid and mentioned what brought her to Badminton. She said, “I was a sprinter initially and I swayed towards Badminton while watching my elder sister play. My wish was supported by my father and that’s how I forayed into the sport.”
She added that balancing her studies and training is a bit of a tough task for her but she has managed up until now because of immeasurable support from her teachers, friends, and family. But she credits her father Subhendu Sekhar Swain and coach Tirupati Kiran for all her success.
