Ganjam: Making regular inspections and paying surprise visits are nothing new when an authority seeks to put back the system on order. But, paying such visits incognito (hiding one’s true identity by playing an out-of-way role) obviously draws attention.

Such an instance has been reported from Sheragada Block in this southern Odisha district as the Block Education Officer (BEO) paid a surprise visit to a school in the guise of a mad man. Such a queer picture has gone viral on social media.

The BEO is Bhaskar Lenka and has tightened up his belt to deliver the goods to students as well as their guardians.

Talking to OMMCOM NEWS over phone, Sheragada Block Education Officer (BEO) Bhaskar Lenka stated that he had received a complaint from the students and guardians about a teacher allegedly playing truant habitually least bothered about the immediate authority headmaster and higher-ups.

“This incognito surprise visit was on second Saturday, which is generally an official holiday of mine. I have these days invited general public and students to lodge their grievances through a complaint box installed in my office. Those teachers who are neglecting duty will be imparted counselling for improvement while those performing duty well will be rewarded. The complainant may not mention identity as they hesitate to speak against a teacher before me,” informed the BEO.

He further informed, “Last week’s Friday, I received a complaint. Basing on it I wanted to probe into the matter on the spot. My intention was to indirectly inspect into the proper implementation of Government’s various schemes and programmes and the performance of the teachers.”

The complaint was from Bakilikana Upper Primary (UP) School, he revealed.

The Sheragada Block Education Officer (BEO) also told OMMCOM NEWS, “Generally official inspections are regularly made and I pay surprise visits during prayer class, mid-day meal time and afternoon hour of the school time. The surprise visit incognito was made at the odd hours when the teachers assume that no officers will pay any visit for inspection. On Saturdays, I visit the schools early due to morning session. I generally visit the prayer classes as in our Ganjam district it holds much significance for the ongoing ‘Prerana’ programme being implemented sincerely.”
