Bhubaneswar: Former MLA from Bangiriposi constituency Chaitanya Prasad Majhi, who was also an influential tribal leader, took his last breath today morning while undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital here in Bhubaneswar.
Born in 1929, Majhi was elected as MLA for the term 2004 to 2009 from Bangiriposi. Majhi was also a member of the O.P.S.C. from 1979-85 and Member of Rajya Sabha from Orissa as Congress candidate from 1972 to 1978. He served as Odisha's Higher Education Minister during Biju Patnaik's Chief Ministership.
He was the Deputy Minister for Petroleum and Chemicals in Union Cabinet and the Member of Academic Council of North Orissa University from 1998-2000. He also published a book on tribal language and culture and was a Member of All India Tribal Literary Forum in New Delhi.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of Chaitanya Prasad Majhi and conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Describing him as a veteran tribal leader, organizer, and an able administrator, Naveen Patnaik said, "He had contributed immensely for the development of Odisha and the tribal people. He was liked by one and all irrespective of political affiliations for his amicable manners. In his death, Odisha lost one of its great sons."
