Odisha: Former Bank Branch Manager Arrested For Embezzling Money In The Name Of Dead People

Bhubaneswar: Economic Offences Wing of Odisha Crime Branch arrested one Gouranga Charan Panda, former Manager of Bank of India’s Remuna Branch in Balasore in connection with a fraud case. He was forwarded to the Court of SDJM, Balasore today.

A case was registered in connection with misappropriation of Government money by Pravat Kumar Das, Business Correspondent. Das was falsely posting money in pension accounts of the persons who were dead since long. Investigation revealed that Gouranga Charan Panda was the manager of the branch from 2013 to 2017. During his incumbency as Branch Manager, Das was entrusted the work of posting of pension rolls.

“In spite of the death of several pensioners, Das had entered false and excessive amount of pension in their accounts each month after their death with an ulterior motive by entering into criminal conspiracy with accused Branch Manager,” the press release by EOW stated.

Till November 2018, he had fraudulently posted an amount to Rs 65 lakhs in the account of one late Parsunam Giri and amount of Rs 67 lakh in the account of one late Sabitri Behera. Following this, the money had been withdrawn through ATM in the name of aforementioned late two pensioners.

In this process, they had misappropriated an amount of Rs 1.32 crores by putting excess and false amount in the pension accounts of the dead pensioners.

In connection with the case, Das was arrested and forwarded to Court in December last year and is still in judicial custody. While Panda was arrested today, further probe into the matter is currently underway.
