Bolangir: As the farming season approaches, a fresh incident of farmer suicide is reported from Bolangir district of Odisha. As per reports, a farmer identified as Bhaktabandhu Dandasena of Barkani village under Sadar police limits consumed poison on 18th July afternoon.

He was rushed to the Balangir Medical College Hospital and then referred to VIMSAR as his condition deteriorated. But the doctors declared him brought dead in Burla.

The Deputy Director (Agriculture) met his family after the incident. His family members have alleged he took this extreme step due to loan pressure.

Notably, he and his two brothers cultivated in a 4 acre land and had availed loan from co-operative society and Micro-finance Company. The deceased used to look after the whole farming issues. Scanty rainfall this year led to mental pressure due to which he committed suicide, his family alleged.

Interestingly, the Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Minister, in his reply to the Assembly had claimed that out of 38 reported farmer suicide case, not a single farmer in the state has committed suicide for reasons relating to farming in last three financial years. The allegations were probed by respective district administrations but none of them was due to financial burden and crop loss.
