Puri: Soon after Odisha Cabinet accorded its seal of approval to evict structures up to 75 metres surronding Puri Srimandir, the Puri district administration began work today by first clearing all unauthorised structures adjacent to ‘Meghnad Pacheri’ (shrine wall).

The work began from South Gate (Ghodadwara). We will ensure that essential services are not disrupted,” said Balwant Singh, Collector of Puri.

Reportedly, a police outpost, toilets and some other buildings and shops were razed. 24 platoons of police force, Collector Balwant Singh and SP Umashankar Das were present in the spot as eviction took place.

On Saturday, Odisha Cabinet decided to implement recommendations made by Justice BP Das Commission of Inquiry to evict structures to ensure safety of devotees.

Meanwhile, servitors and local businessmen have criticised the move. They have threatened protest as their business will suffer and several historically significant structures will be razed as a result of the decision.
