Bhubaneswar: Incumbent Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Dr R.P. Sharma, has been duly selected as the new Member of Lokayukta following the seal of approval accorded by the Governor.

As per the sources, Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal has formally nodded to the proposal of Lokayukta Selection Committee that had earlier recommended Sharma’s name.

Sources also added that the Odisha cadre senior IPS officer is no more keen on continuing his government service. He has opted for retirement following the sad demise of his wife during the general elections this year. He had to avail leave of absence from the Election Commission of India for about a month then. Even though he rejoined amid the election period, his domestic constraints have compelled him to opt for retiring from the top cop post as well as government service.

As Government of Odisha needed Dr Sharma’s service to the people of Odisha, his name was recommended by the Lokayukta Selection Committee comprising the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and others, sources further stated.

Meanwhile, Odisha Government has already begun its exercise of selecting the successor of incumbent DGP R.P. Sharma. A list of the probable senior IPS officers of Odisha cadre has been sent to the special panel of Supreme Court for its selection in pursuance of the apex court’s standing order for appointing a new DGP of any State.
