Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) carried out a demolition drive at old buildings which have been declared unsafe in Old Town area on Friday. A market complex adjacent to the Lingaraj Temple was razed today which also witnessed mild protests.

Four JCB machines were engaged by the authorities for the demolition drive which began as per a prior notice. One platoon of police force has been deployed at the spot to avoid any untoward incident and public protest.

The shopkeepers expressed unhappiness over the demolition drive. The civic body had asked the traders to shift their business at the new market complex established by the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation behind the Anantavasudev Temple. However, the traders sought more time.

Municipal Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary said that in 2013, this building was declared unsafe and everybody was aware. "Soon after the new shops were allotted, the traders were given a timeline to vacate. 48 people have been given shops in the new market. From our side allottment has been completed," he added.
