Talcher: Soon after a larger crater developed in Talcher last evening, residents of the town today took to streets and called for a city-wide shutdown protesting the mining operations. The locals have alleged that the authorities of the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) were not filling the underground mines properly.

Reportedly, one Santilata Bai’s tea shop near Town police station developed a crater last evening. Within few hours the crater became a 5-feet deep gaping hole. The incident created fear and panic in the area, following which locals decided to call for a bandh.

While, local residents blocked main roads in the town demanding intervention of the district administration, vehicular communication and businesses were affected. During the picketing, locals alleged that authorities of MCL had not filled the now defunct Champapasi underground coal mines with packing sand due to which the craters had formed.

Meanwhile, MCL authorities have said that the work to pack sand in the underground mines had been outsourced to a third-party company.
