Puri/Bhubaneswar: Prior to the ruling BJD’s 20th Foundation Day in the pilgrim town here, Odisha Cabinet led by BJD supremo-cum-Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik accorded its seal of approval of several significant proposals concerning Odia language and its cultural heritage.

Unprecedentedly, Odisha Cabinet was held at the Circuit House of a district headquarters town and for first time outside the capital city as well as the State Secretariat.

Prominent among the proposals nodded by the State Cabinet are formation of ‘Heritage Cabinet’, ‘Odia Language Commission’, separate Culture Department christened as ‘Odia Language, Literature & Culture’ (after separating it from presently clubbed Tourism Department), bringing in amendment in the Offical Language Act-1954 for mandatory use of Odia language in all official and administrative works across Odisha from March 1, 2018.

Also amendment will be made in the Odisha Shop & Commercial Establishment Act-1956 and Odia signage for commercial establishments will be made compulsory. Stringent action and legal punishment will be initiated against the violators.
