Odisha CM Launches 'Sunetra' Programme: 10 Mobile Eye Care Units Flagged Off

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched the 'Sunetra' programme under which 10 mobile vision care units were flagged off from the State Secretariat. As a part of the programme, 53 eye care hospitals will established in 18 districts.

Odisha became the first State in the country to start the WHO-IAPP programme on blindness control within the stipulated time. Through the Sunetra programme, the State Government aims at providing best quality eye treatment, glasses and controlling blindness.

Free cataract operations, eye-tests at community health centres and treatment of all eye related ailments will also come under the purview of Sunetra.

The eye tests will be conducted at Government schools extensively to ensure good vision of the young students. To make the programme digital, a database, web portal, mobile app and electronic medical reports are part of the programme.

Under the Sunetra or 'Mukhya Mantri Chakshyu Jatna Karyakram' (Universal Eye Health Programme), the following facilities are available:

Free eye care service; Upgradation of various facilities (fixed vision centres and mobile vision centres) with advance equipment; Strengthening trained manpower; Screening of school children and free spectacles distribution; Free cataract operation, corneal transplantation services and corneal blindness treatment; Other free treatment for diabetic retinopathy, serious eye problems and glaucoma related treatment to the patients.

Fixed Vision Centres: It is easily accessible primary curative and preventive vision/eye care centre in the community.

Services available:

53 upgraded Fixed Vision Centres in 18 districts - Balasore, Bhadrak, Bolangir, Boudh, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kalahandi, Kendrapada, Keonjhar, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Puri, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Sundergarh are upgraded with advanced equipment such as Streak Retinoscope and LED Vision Chart, in first phase during 2018-19.

All 377 CHC level Fixed Vision Centres will be upgraded in phased manner.
