Bhubaneswar: As predicted by the Regional Meteorological Department, a layer of thick fog has thrown normal life in the State out of gear on Saturday morning.
The blanket of fog also brought down visibility levels affecting commuters in the smart city and its twin the silk city. Decreased visibility forced people to slow down their vehicles and drive with fog lights on.
Heavy fog also resulted in derailment of LTT Express near Cuttack yesterday when the express train hit a stationary goods train. The fog blanket also resulted in a boat carrying about 30 people getting stranded in the Chilika Lake.
These are some of the precautions while commuting during fog:
1: Increase your count distance by 5 seconds instead of the normal 2 seconds behind another vehicle. Never rush or speed to get out of the fog.
2: The moisture in the air may continuously collect on the windshield, making it more difficult to see. Adjust the defroster and windshield wiper speed as necessary.
3: Use fog lights or driving lights
4: The visibility in front of you will sharply decrease in a fog, so use the vehicle's low beam lights
5: When travelling with passengers ask them to help keep an eye out for oncoming cars and obstacles on the road.
Reports stated that the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the fog situation will continue for another day or two.
