Jeypore: The Hindi idiom ‘Jako Rakhe Saiyan, Maar Sake Na Koi, (If God protects you there is no one that can harm you) was proved in a small village named Kebidi under Boriguma PS of Koraput district. A newborn babygirl was abandoned immediately she was born, and was buried alive wrapped in a cloth near a culvert.

When some youths went for nature’s call at around 6:30 am, one of them saw the cloth.

“We suspected some foul play as it was not present earlier. So we called some villagers and dug out the cloth. A baby girl was wrapped in the cloth and was still breathing. An old woman of the village came forward and volunteered to look after the baby,” informed Jagdish Khara of the village.

The old woman and the other villagers then informed the police and took the baby immediately to Rabanaguda Community Health Centre (CHC) in critical condition. “The infant was suffering from mild hypothermia. Now she is stable. She was born barely six to seven hours before, it seems,” said Dr Soumyaranjan.

Interestingly, the baby has a visible cleft on her lips which might have induced the parents to abandon it.

Though the identity of the baby is still to be ascertained, such cases have come to forefront many a times in the State.
