Bhubaneswar: Excise sleuths today seized brown sugar worth Rs 38 lakhs after conducting raids at capital city slums this morning and held three persons including two women.

Names of persons arrested- Sonu Khan, Sangita Mohanty and Tukuna Mohanty.

Acting on a tip-off, the excise sleuths conducted raids in Haladipadia and Chintamaniswar slums under Laxmisagar police limits. The officials seized brown sugar that had been brought from Balasore and was being peddled in the capital city. The brown sugar weighed around 300 gram and was worth Rs 38 lakh, informed excise officials.

The joint raid was conducted by Bhubaneswar Excise team and Cuttack Flying squad. Officers on duty were Prasanna Acharya, Sarat Chandra Bhanja, Hrudaya Samanta, Prabhat Sethi and staff.

Satyajit Mohanty, Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack said, "All of this is the question of demand and supply. Because there is demand of such products, supply is coming from various parts of the State. We have to get to the root of the supply chain. Due to intoxication, petty crimes like snatching and all is also increasing."

"We are planning to start an initiative in which raids will be conducted in the slums and awareness programs via sports will be held for youths of these areas for drugs enforcement," he added.

M S Lyngdoh, Head Of World Vision India (a developmental agency) said, "It is very important to catch them young. We hope that the right people can show them the right path."
