Ganjam: Nilamani Bisoi, Bharatiya Janata Party’s MLA candidate for Sorada Assembly Constituency, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly smashing an electronic voting machine (EVM) while second-phase polling was underway in Ganjam.

Reportedly, the incident occurred at polling booth no. 182 in Renti village under Sorada police limits. 414 voters had already casted their votes when Bisoi barged into the booth, spewed abuses on officers and broke the machine.

Aska SDPO Suryamani Pradhan said that Bisoi had been arrested after the Presiding Officer lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange informed that the Chief Electoral Officer will be apprised about the incident. However, Bisoi had denied the allegations. Further probe into the matter is currently underway.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Odisha unit vice president Samir Mohanty said, “BJD workers were rigging the machine when Nilamani Bisoi went to the booth. He tried to stop them and in the process of physical altercation, the machine fell down and broke. The BJD has conspired Bisoi’s arrest. We protest this and we have filed a complaint with the CEO in connection with the incident.”

On the other, BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra said, “Bharatiya Janata Party has given tickets to criminals. 28 cases, including one of murder, are pending against Bisoi, who has been given BJP ticket to contest polls from Sorada. Now when he has been caught doing poll violence, the BJP is ttrying to hide its face by giving such statements.”
