**Balasore:** A bizarre case of fraud has come to the fore as a business correspondent was arrested by Odisha Crime Branch’s Economic Offences Wing on charges of embezzling money by projecting dead people alive.
The arrested accused has been identified as Bank of India’s Remuna branch’s business correspondent Prabhat Das (32) of Madhipur. The press note by EOW states that Das was misappropriating Government money by means of falsely posting the amounts in the pension accounts of the persons who were dead since long.
He had been using this modus operandi since 2014, stated reports. Das will be forwarded to Court of SDJM, Balasore soon and further investigation into the case is currently underway.
“Late Parsuram Giri was a pensioner and his pension amount was credited in his account maintained at Bank of India, Remuna Branch. He expired on 27.12.2014. Similarly, late Sabitri Behera was also a pensioner and was getting family pension after death of her husband. She expired on 22.03.2014. In spite of the death of above two pensioners Prabhat Das had entered false and excessive amount of pension in their accounts each month with an ulterior motive,” mentioned the press note.
Till November 2018, Das had posted an amount to Rs 65 lakhs in the account of Late Parsuram Giri and amount of Rs.67 lakh in the account of Late Sabitri Behera and withdrew the same through ATM. Accused Prabhat fraudulently managed to obtain the ATM cards in the name of aforementioned late two pensioners and withdrew the amount posted in their respective accounts through ATM counters. In the process he had misappropriated an amount of Rs.1.32 crores by putting excess and false amount in the pension accounts of the dead pensioners.
Further probe into the matter is currently underway.
