Odisha: All District Headquarters To Have Gandhiji's Statues

Bhubaneswar: As part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, the Odisha government has decided to install statues of the Father of the Nation in all district headquarters which have no such statues as of now.

Moreover, in places wherever Mahatma Gandhi's statues have been installed and roads named after him will be freed of encroachment and cleaned.

"Gandhi's statues will be installed in the district headquarters and wherever such statues exist, those will be beautified, made free of encroachment and cleanliness will be practiced," informed Manoranjan Panigrahi, Principal Secretary of Culture department briefing newsmen soon after a review meeting of the State Level Committee for Observance of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Lok Seva Bhawan here today.

Panigrahi further informed that as a memorial dedicated to Gandhiji's first visit to Cuttack on 23rd March 1921 a mural painting of the Father of the Nation in kurta and cap along with Kasturba and Gopabandhu will be created.

Gandhiji then used to wear kurta and cap and we have a picture of that, he added.

The Principal Secretary said that funds have been provided to the district administration for the purpose.

He said quotable quotes of Gandhiji along with photographs of his visit will be published as a coffee table book by the Information and Public Relations department.

A picture of Gandhiji will be given to every school so that the next generation will be inspired by the great man's ideas, he added.

Panigrahi informed that today's meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy was basically held to coordinate work assigned to different departments.
