Dhenkanal: Moist eyes and a pall of gloom prevailed in Badasuala of Dhenkanal district’s Kamakhyanagar block as a young jawan named Ajit Kumar Sahoo hailing from the village died in a blast at Jammu & Kashmir on Monday.

On Monday, an Army Casper- a bullet and mine proof vehicle- of 44 Rashtriya Rifles was attacked by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on its way at Arihal village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district which injured nine jawans. One among them was Ajit, who succumbed to his injuries late in the night while undergoing treatment at a local hospital there.

Ajit had been recently transferred to J&K from Kolkata. Before his transfer, he visited home to spend time with his family and had left Dhenkanal on June 9. After reporting for work, he was on his way to the exact place of posting when the blast took place.

In 2015, Ajit joined Indian Army. Along with his family, the entire village rejoiced and took pride when he was selected. Little did they know that they stared at such a bleak future. Ajit’s family members broke down after hearing the news on Tuesday and have not been able to cope with the situation. They were unable to interact with media personnel during the testing times.

Meanwhile, Dhenkanal Collector Nikhil Pavan Kalyan said, “It is an unfortunate incident. But, it is also a matter of pride as he has given his life during line of duty. Deepest condolences to the family and we will provide all the support to the kin that is required by them. His body will be brought in a service flight to Bhubaneswar today evening. Then, we will follow up on how to bring the body to Dhenkanal.”
