Puri: The New Year day saw footfall of more than two lakh devotees thronging to the Srimandir to pay obeisance to the holy trinity.

Like every year elaborate arrangements were made to facilitate darshan of the Lords by the devotees who visit in lakhs to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath on the New Year. Special arrangements have been put in place to ensure timely conduct of rituals in the 12th-century shrine besides, smooth ‘darshan’ of the deities for devotees.

These facilities/amenities/arrangements will remain in place till May. These will be dismantled for Rath Yatra to facilitate the Lord's nine-day sojourn to his birth place-the Gundicha Temple and will be later reassembled after the event.

Beginning with wishes for New Year, Dr Krishan Kumar, Chief Administrator, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) said, “Despite heavy turnout of devotees, everything went on smoothly. Officials present made sure that devotees have a great darshan. Servitors too made sure that all rituals were completed on time.”

He added that SJTA with Odisha Government shall take several steps in future to improve the functioning of the Srimandir. Dr Kumar also said of an app which is about to be launched in May which will have details regarding temple rituals, timings and transportation.

“All rituals were completed on time today. Puri Police’s crowd management was in sync with the ritual timings. There was a footfall of about 2 lakh people today and it has been very peaceful and organised till now. The crowd and traffic management went as previously chalked out plans,” said Ashish Kumar Singh, DIG of Police, Central Range.

Amongst the several devotees was state Minister for Sports Tusharkanti Behera. The minister wished people of Odisha on the occasion of English New Year and prayed for peace, harmony and success for all.

He said, “By the grace of Lord Jagannath, I had a great darshan today. Puri’s development as part of Heritage Corridor as announced by the honourable CM Naveen Patnaik work is going at a great speed. I request everyone to be patient with the development process because it will be beneficial for all of us in the end.”
