Bhubaneswar: The devastating effect of Cyclone FANI has created four new mouths in Chilika which is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon and one of the biggest habitats of Irrawaddy dolphins in the world, infomed officials of Chilika Development Authority.

As per a tweet by Susanta Nanda, CDA's Chief Executive Officer- #Chilika lagoon had only 2 active mouths - the point where it meets the sea- before #cycloneFANI. 4 new mouths have opened due to wave energy with high tidal prism & saline ingress to the lake. Effects on bio diversity being assessed.

As per reports, the earlier two functional mouths were at Sanpatna and Arakhakuda village, both few kilometers apart. After the Cyclone, three more mouths have been created in between the previous two and a fourth one beyond Arakhakuda.

With more connections to the sea, salinity level has increased in the lagoon. Thus, officials are currently assessing if the salinity might pose a threat to a large group of aquatic animals.
