Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated the membership campaign of his party at the party headquarters here.
Naveen inaugurated his party's membership drive by signing as the first primary member of the party along with 24 other primary members.
"Today on the occasion of auspicious Ganesh Puja my best wishes to you.On this auspicious day I inaugurate the membership drive of our party," said Naveen addressing party men at the party's headquarters here.
"BJD is the party of the people of Odisha. The 4.5 crore people of Odisha are its family members. The Biju Janata Dal has been receiving blessings from each town,each village and each house.Through this membership drive we will meet them again. We will meet farmers,youth and common man and seek their blessings. We will ask about their wellbeing.With their blessings we will further strengthen the party,"the BJD president elaborated while trying to touch the emotional chord of the people of Odisha.
"I firmly believe our membership campaign would be fully successful with the support of the people of Odisha," he added.
The BJD's membership drive which kicked off from today targets to double it.It is the biggest political party in Odisha with 47 lakh members.
The BJD president will be assessing the progress of the membership drive once in every 15 days till October 31, when the drive ends.
"Our party's membership drive started today.Keeping in with the provisions of our party constitution members renew their membership every three years.Party president Naveen Patnaik got himself enrolled as a primary member of the party today.He also enrolled 24 more and became an active member of the party.Only active members can be office-bearers.This membership drive will continue for two months.The drive will be undertaken starting from towns to villages, from the Capital city to every ward of the villages.Last time we had enrolled 47 lakh members. This time we will enroll nearly double of that," said Prasanna Acharya, BJD vice-president talking to the media at the party headquarters.
The main opposition BJP is also currently on an enrolment drive to increase its membership to 50 lakh. Presently, the party has 36 lakh members.
