Nagada Malnutrition: NHRC Seeks Report From Odisha Govt

04 October 2019

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from Odisha government on measures taken to prevent malnutrition in Nagada of Jajpur district.

On the basis of a petition filed by a rights activist, the Commission directed the Chief Secretary to submit a report within four weeks. The petition alleged that though Rs 23 crore has been spent in the area, residents, especially children are deprived of nutritious food.

The NHRC has asked the Chief Secretary to depose before it, if he fails to submit the report within the stipulated time. The petitioner alleged that both the State and Centre have failed to provide adequate nutritious food to Nagada children.

In 2016, the malnutrition cases of Nagada were highlighted in the media. Around 20 children lost their lives reportedly due to malnutrition in this remote hamlet of Jajpur district in Odisha.
