Jajpur: A newlywed woman suffered about 80 per cent burn injuries after being allegedly set on fire by her in-laws at Jalanda village under Korei police limits of Jajpur district.

The sad incident occurred On October 23 but the matter came to fore after the survivor’s father posted a video sharing his ordeal which went viral on social media.

One Bilash Chandra Das of Torata in Bhandaripokhari area of Bhadrak area had married off his daughter recently in Jalanda. Due to some family discord, the in-laws allegedly doused the woman with kerosene and set her on fire. The Sarpanch and other villagers reportedly rescued and rushed her to District Headquarter Hospital (DHH), Jajpur.

Upon getting information, Das rushed to hospital. However, the woman was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, on doctor’s suggestion.

Das alleges that he tried lodging an FIR at Korei Police Station two days after the incident but was refused by the Police officials. He said, “An official informed that since IIC was not present, I should just submit a written complaint and visit the police station after seven days.”

He further says with his daughter’s condition worsening each passing day, the Police are yet to take her official statement.

Losing all hope, Das shot a video narrating his ordeal and posted it on social media. The video garnered a lot of attention and shock from all quarters of society.

With mounting pressure, the Korei Police lodged a complaint and initiated a probe. They have also arrested the survivor’s husband who was allegedly involved.
