Bhubaneswar: In a bid to end use of mobile phones by criminals in jails to connect with their crime network outside the prisons and strengthen security in jails, the Odisha government has planned to install mobile phone locators in all the 91 jails across the State this financial year.
"In this fiscal 2019-20, we will purchase 300 mobile phone locators at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh. These devices as per their meaning will locate where mobile phones are concealed," informed Santosh Upadhaya, Director General of Prisons here today.
He added that these mobile phone locators will be provided to all the 91 jails in Odisha as per their strength.
"This will be a game-changing step in the field of jail security," said Upadhaya.
He further said that joint inspection of jails will be conducted by jail magistrate and police teams and even jail staff will not be allowed to take mobile phones inside the prison premises.
The DG Prisons warned of strict enforcement of the norm and warned of exemplary punishment for the violators.
